International conference INPP (Network of Philosophy and Psychiatry)

October 8-9, 2026: What can Philosophy do for Mental Health Care?
For the last decades philosophy has played an increasingly important role in debates on the legitimation, organization and practice of mental health care. It questions the aims of care, critically examines the boundaries of diagnoses and explores the roles of experience and expertise. But how might it actually inform practice? In other words, what can philosophy do for mental health care?
The 2026 INPP conference was held in Nijmegen, the Netherlands on October 8-9, 2026 and aimed to bridge the gap between philosophical theory and mental health care practice and to explore the diverse ways in which philosophy can contribute to the practice of mental health care. The conference brought together researchers in the field of philosophy and psychiatry, clinical scientists, mental health care practitioners, experiential experts, and others interested in understanding and improving mental health care through philosophy.
Special attention was given to ensure sufficient sessions were specifically designed for those who are new to the field of philosophy. Early-career participants and newcomers were very welcome, and no prior specialist expertise in philosophy was required to join.
A central aim of the conference was to create space for dialogue and connection: between professionals working in mental health care and philosophy, between diverse perspectives and lived experiences. To support this exchange, the programme included ample opportunities to meet, network, and build bridges across disciplines. A number of social activities were therefore also part of the programme.
